27th September 2022 | Fandom at Gilly's, Koramangala, Bangalore
The Music School Bangalore (TMSB) took its undergraduate students out of
the classroom and onto one of Bangalore's most celebrated live music
stages on 27th September 2022, hosting TMSB Spotlight, an evening of
original music, live performance, and graduation at Fandom, Gilly's in
Koramangala. It was an evening that embodied everything TMSB believes music education should be not a rehearsal for real life, but real life itself.
An Evening of Original Music
TMSB Spotlight was not a recital of covers or a display of technical exercises. Every
performance on the Fandom stage that evening featured original compositions — music conceived, written, arranged, and performed by TMSB's undergraduate students as part of their course curriculum.
This distinction matters enormously. Composition is at the heart of TMSB's undergraduate programs. Students are not simply taught to play other people's music, they are guided through the creative process of developing their own musical voice, building their own sonic identity, and bringing original ideas to life in a studio and performance context. TMSB Spotlight was the moment that process became public. The moment students who had spent months developing original compositions in TMSB's studios brought those compositions to a live audience — in a real venue, under real lights, in front of real people who had come to listen.
For many of those students, it was their first experience of performing original music
publicly. And they did it not in a school hall or a practice room, but on the stage of one of Bangalore's most vibrant and celebrated live music venues.
Fandom at Gilly's: A Stage That Meant Something
The choice of Fandom at Gilly's in Koramangala as the venue for TMSB Spotlight was
deliberate and meaningful.
Fandom is one of Bangalore's biggest and most celebrated live music stages- a venue that has hosted international musicians and artists, and that sits at the heart of the city's thriving contemporary music scene.
It is a space where music is taken seriously, where audiences come specifically to experience live performance, and where the standard expected of every artist who takes the stage is uncompromisingly high. Performing at Fandom placed TMSB's students in exactly the kind of environment they were being trained for a professional live music setting with a real audience, real sound, and real stakes. The experience of taking the stage at a venue of Fandom's calibre is qualitatively different from performing in a classroom or a college hall. It demands confidence, presence, and the ability to connect with an audience that has no prior
relationship with the performer.
TMSB's undergraduate students delivered on every count.
Graduation on the Stage
TMSB Spotlight was also a graduation ceremony; but not one that resembled a
conventional academic event.
Rather than a formal hall, certificates were distributed to graduating students on the Fandom stage- in the same space where they had just performed their original
compositions, in front of the same audience that had just witnessed their talent.
It was a graduation that felt earned. A celebration that was inseparable from the music itself. And a powerful statement about what TMSB believes a qualification in music should represent not just academic achievement, but the ability to create, perform, and move an audience.
For the graduating students, receiving their certificates on that stage — after performing their own original compositions in front of a live Bangalore audience — was a moment that captured everything their education at TMSB had been building toward.
What TMSB Spotlight Represented
Events like TMSB Spotlight are central to the institution's philosophy of music
education.
At TMSB, the stage is not a reward for completing a course. It is an integral part of the course itself. From their earliest days at TMSB, students are given opportunities to
perform in front of peers, in front of faculty, and in front of public audiences. By the
time they reach the end of their undergraduate program, performing original music in a live venue is not a terrifying prospect. It is a natural extension of everything they have been doing.
TMSB Spotlight at Fandom was the culmination of that philosophy. a public
declaration that TMSB's graduates are not just qualified musicians. They are performance- ready artists with original voices and the confidence to share them with the world.
A Statement from the Founder
Milton Lance, Founder and Director of The Music School Bangalore, reflected on the
significance of the evening:
"TMSB Spotlight at Fandom was everything we want our students' graduation to look like. Not a formal ceremony in a hall, but a live performance of original music at one of Bangalore's biggest stages, a venue that has hosted international musicians and artists. These students didn't just complete a course, they composed original music, took it to a professional stage, and performed it in front of a live audience. That is what music education should produce. Artists. Performers. Creators. And that is exactly what walked off that stage at Fandom."
A Tradition Worth Continuing
The success of TMSB Spotlight at Fandom in September 2022 reinforced what TMSB
had always believed that the best way to celebrate the completion of a music
education is through music itself. Live, original, and in front of an audience that comes to listen.
It was an evening that Bangalore's music community noticed. And one that set a
standard for how TMSB would continue to celebrate its graduating students on real stages, with real audiences, performing music that was entirely their own!
